Coding culture: What makes these Colorado engineering teams special

Behind every great tech product is a team of engineers with distinct skill sets, personalities and approaches — all of which combine to make that team, its culture and the way they all work together unique.

We caught up with two local techies to learn more about what makes their teams special, what traits they all share and what they look for when adding new members to the team.

TrackVia’s low-code application platform eases the burden on overloaded and under-resourced IT departments by providing a simple way for techies and non-techies alike to build and deploy their own enterprise apps. SVP of Product Walker Fenton said what defines his team’s culture is its passion for the product and an action-oriented mindset that empowers every team member at every level to come to the table with their most creative ideas.

What makes your team unique from other teams you've been part of?

TrackVia isn’t the typical office. We spar intellectually one moment and then grab a pizza together the next. We believe in rallying great people with considerable skills to deliver the best outcome on every project — and I mean it when I say every project.

TrackVia was founded on an action-oriented mentality, meaning every team member is given permission to use their unique skills to make things better. One of our mottos is “never stop improving,” and our team takes this very seriously. It’s a way we constantly challenge ourselves and each other to always build the best experience, whether it’s for our technology, our customers or our organization.

When it comes to hiring new engineers to join your team, how can you tell when someone has something unique to add to your culture, and are there any traits that all your team members share?

If you believe in challenging yourself, tackling problems in creative ways and working with like-minded individuals, TrackVia is the right place for you. We’re creating technology that’s never been built before, so we look for people who are comfortable being a little uncomfortable at times. We also look for people who are constantly curious and willing to break down silos to work across teams. We work hard but also keep things fun, casual and highly creative.

Golden-based TimeSeries leverages its expertise in Mendix, Big Data, AI and blockchain to build user-friendly, data-driven applications that help their clients stand out from the competition. Mendix Developer and Consultant Luke Bashford said that the friendships he’s built at TimeSeries make his experiences there more fun and rewarding.

What makes your team unique from other teams you've been part of?

The TimeSeries team feels unique to me because of how we interact with each other at the office and outside of work. From my first day in the office, it felt like I immediately had a ton of new friends I could rely on for nearly anything. My coworkers and I have created a perfect balance of having fun and getting things done that leaves us always excited to show up to work. We are friends first and coworkers second, making it incredibly enjoyable to work together in our collaborative workspace.

Our company culture is built upon people who are self-starters with a robust sense of humor and the ability to be receptive to criticism. When we are considering a new hire for our team, we look at their past skillsets along with their ability and desire to learn something new. Anyone who can get excited about the work they do and apply this excitement to their professional career always stands out as an ideal candidate at TimeSeries.
